Illuminate Black

Archives of Ontario, Toronto

Opened in February 2026, Illuminate Black: Shining Light on the Black Presence in Ontario is a landmark exhibition that traces more than 250 years of Black presence in Ontario through archival records, objects, photographs and oral histories. Envisioned and led by curator and historian Dr. Natasha Henry-Dixon, the exhibition was developed by Blue Rhino Design, translating her curatorial vision into a fully realized visitor experience. A dedicated advisory committee provided guidance and feedback throughout the process. The result is an exhibition that centres Black voices and experiences, bringing forward perspectives that have often been overlooked or pushed aside.

In Illuminate Black, visitors move through a series of thematic spaces that combine archival material with immersive environments – a barbershop and hair salon, a family kitchen, a meeting hall and more. Within these spaces, visitors encounter personal stories, family mementos and community touchstones that celebrate culture, connection and joy in the lived experiences of Black Ontarians.
