The Cold War in Canada

The Diefenbunker: Canada’s Cold War Museum

In 2022, Blue Rhino Design was contracted by the Diefenbunker: Canada’s Cold War Museum to develop and install two permanent exhibitions to tell the story of the Cold War in Canada. The first was a renewed contemporary take on an existing introductory exhibit on the Cold War.

The second exhibition focused on the Indigenous experience of the Distance Early Warning (DEW) Line in Canada’s Arctic. It illustrates how this line of defence remains relevant to contemporary issues of government relations with Inuit communities, climate change, and Arctic sovereignty.

For the Inuit exhibition, we hired a museum professional who is Inuit as well as an Inuktitut translator. The story was told through impactful images and the voices of those who were impacted. Everything was delivered in Inuktitut, English, and French.

The exhibitions opened in March 2023.
